Will A.I. take down mankind? Most kindly yes!

Sam Altman jolted the world awake, just as brutally as on D-Day! He points to the findings of Roman Yampolskiy, a professor of computer science, who believes that the chances of a catastrophic event occurring within the next 100 years are enormous. Or is it merely to stir some excitement around the book that the latter has just published?

Is there such a thing as coincidence? Just the other day, I explained with a simple children’s game what A.I. actually is, does, and can do: pattern recognition. On the website “code.org” you learn through play how to program a little robot to collect garbage from the sea. During the explanation, a huge shiver went through my body! I had once seen a robot dog play guard in a game. But a day earlier, Twitter showed me images of that same kind of dog on the battlefield with a machine gun. Add to that the failed game Wargames, both the 1983 version and the one described in this blog ( at the end it was fake-news! )

Combine this with the short film Yuval Harari showed at the Love.Tomorrow congress and yes… it’s enough to lose sleep over. Especially from minute 7 (the rub), it becomes clear, at least to me. Things could have been created long ago that we will never see or even dare to assume exist. How brave were we to massively offer our faces to the A.I. module to create an image of “the Western face.” Russia, which views the West as one decadent mess, would be more than happy to send such war robots into the field with one clear image in mind…

So, dear Ramon, yes, the chance that A.I. will help in the extermination of humanity is very likely, precisely because humanity is involved with it. Whether that will take another 100 years to happen, we can only guess.
